Youth Empowerment

For Hala Nevoani, giving instruction for developing teenage girls was a unique opportunity to examine from within the society where she grew up and maybe change the life of one girl.

“To my great pleasure I joined the Amirim organization and worked as an instructor of a group of girls in the Yarca “Serisa” and Yanuach junior high schools. The beauty of the program is two-fold. In addition to developing young girls I also felt a change in me.”

In the framework of the program, which is directed by the Ministry of Education, small groups of young girls or mixed groups of teenage girls and boys receive instruction from students and professional instructors from the Druze and Arab communities. The instructor covers subjects such as sexual harassment, discrimination, family pressures and other phenomena that come out all the more forcefully during the teenage period. “In my personal experience I saw with my eyes the girls' development and their good reactions to the subjects they were exposed to. Moreover, the directors of the school had were so impressed that they asked to keep the program running in the coming years.”

From Nevoani's point of view, one of the most fascinating experiences took place while instructing a group of fifteen-year-old girls in which one of the girls was rejected for a reason beyond her control.  “Through learning about  discrimination, prejudice  and why people should not be judged for circumstances beyond their control I succeeded, together with the girls, to guide the group to think in a positive manner in general and towards this rejected girl in particular.”                                                                                                                               &nb
